We had a very busy and practical Thursday this week with lessons in Art, Science and Food D.T. In Art we finished off our ancient Greek vases by adding golden patterns and human figures using acrylic paint. Our science lesson involved observing the irreversible change that occurs when mixing bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. Lastly, in Food D.T we used and refined a recipe to make hummus. It's safe to say that it was one busy but enjoyable day!

Our theme open afternoon consisted of decoding ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and producing watercolour landscapes of ancient Egypt.
Thank you to the parents who came; i was a pleasure to share our learning with you. This week we brought our ancient Greek vase designs to life with the help of Mrs Humphreys. Using different techniques and a range of utensils we were able to sculpt our clay to create brilliant vase designs. We will now wait for them to dry before applying black and gold paint to add the detail of patterns and the human figure.
During science this week, we got hands on with different materials and observed how their properties changed as we applied different factors, such as force and temperature. Below are a selection of pictures that show us making: a non-Newtonian fluid, a Polydoh mouldable plastic and slime! We had great fun and enjoyed getting practical with our science.
This year's World Book Day involved us being treated to a lovely puppet show and creating persuasive adverts for books that we have been reading recently.
We have been getting to grips with orally rehearsing our new model text for our persuasive letter unit in English. We have read and discussed key aspects of the text map and have recently been focusing on retelling it through small group performances. Below are a selection of photos.
This week we visited the Ashmolean Museum (in Oxford) to learn more about ancient Greece. We looked around their cast gallery at different statues and explored other exhibits depicting life in ancient Greece. Whilst investigating these areas of the museum, we undertook different activities based on finding evidence to discover more about the past. Below are some pictures of our trip.
We got to grips with converting improper fractions to mixed numbers on Thursday! In order to do this, we focused on using concrete, pictorial and abstract resources. The use of multi link cubes certainly helped us to understand the concept!
This week in Kestrels we investigated the thermal conductivity of four different materials in order to conclude which would be best to insulate a warm drink.
The materials we tested included: metal, plastic, glass and card. We poured the same amount of water into each cup and recorded their temperatures every two minutes, for ten minutes. Each group worked really well together to ensure that the investigation was kept fair and accurate. We now have an improved idea of which materials we would prefer our flasks to be made out of! In science this week we focused on electrical conductivity. In order to test which types of objects best conduct electricity, we used a short circuit and a range of materials. If the light bulb was lit, we knew that the object was good conductor.
As a results of investigating plastic, glass, wood, metal and rubber, we found that metallic objects best conducted electricity. |
