Ever wondered what it's like to travel to another planet? Have you ever thought about what you might see, do or need to survive in space? Kestrels Class has got the answers to each of these questions!
In English, we have been working very hard on our non-chronological reports to inform the reader about what it would be like to travel into space. We would like to be able to say that we've been to space to get a good idea of what it's like for ourselves, but fortunately for us, our imagination, creativity and knowledge of space have all come in very handy. Over the past couple weeks, we have been learning about how to inform, using the structure and language of a non-chronological report. We have become very familiar with each of these aspects and have now applied them to our own pieces of work. Examples of topics covered in our reports include: what you might see, the purpose of your trip and what you would need. The language used for each of these topics has been so descriptive that you'll think that Kestrels Class has actually been to space!

This week has been Anti-bullying week, for which we have: looked at, discussed and come up with solutions for issues linked to bullying that affect children. In Kestrels, we have completed a range of activities and the children have shown great maturity and understanding towards the topics covered.
We began the week with two assemblies on Monday, given my a guest speaker, who highlighted the importance of kindness and how a kind thought can lead to a kind action. We discussed this further in class, applying it to different scenarios, and sketched what we thought kindness looked like (the images were incredible). For the following lesson we discussed the positive and negative outcomes of actions linked to specific bullying situations. First, we thought of an example of bullying and then thought about how we would feel about the situation (good and bad feelings). Subsequently, we highlighted the actions linked to the good and bad feelings and later how they would play out. A flow chart was designed to display these sequence of events and we all agreed that having a positive mindset from the start was the key to avoiding major issues. The end the week, the children debated and defined the word 'bullying'. As a result, we discussed the difference between being rude, mean and bullying. The children did an excellent job of recalling the impact of being kind and how this can stop the need for anyone to be rude, mean or bully. We're very proud of the deep and thoughtful learning we've undertaken in Kestrels this week and now understand the importance of the Power of Good. |
