During our science lesson this week our aim was to see what material is the best thermal insulator. We investigated four materials, which included: bubble wrap, silk, newspaper and foil, and tested their thermal insulation by seeing which material could keep a cup of hot chocolate the warmest over a set period of time.
Before the investigation, we developed our understanding of thermal insulation and then made our predictions. Each pair was given a specific material to investigate by recording (using a thermometer) how warm their material kept a hot chocolate for a total of 14 minutes. We gathered the data as a class and took average readings from across the pairs that were investigating the same materials. Overall, bubble wrap kept the cups of hot chocolate warmer over the 14 minutes, because its temperature drop was lower compared to the other three materials. Therefore, next time you need to keep your drink warm, use something plastic! As part of our RE lesson this week, we discussed the Ten Commandments and how the govern the lives of Christians and Jewish people. After talking about the meaning of each, we tried to explain if any could apply to our own lives. Upon improving our understanding of the Ten Commandments we voted and debated on which commandments we felt was the most important. The only way to settle this was a healthy parliamentary debate! Overall, commandment 5, 'Honour your mother and father', gained the majority vote. Which commandment do you feel is the most important?
What was the Parthenon, in Greece, used for?
Write your answer in the comment section below to get a house point. As part of our English focus on newspaper report writing we have been focusing on the use of speech to provide the reader with a quote. We've developing our understanding of how important this is in order to give different opinions about topics.
To further our understanding we wrote our own examples and have then been journalists, taking quotes from each other. However, we didn't just take quotes on any topic, oh no! We focused our discussion on the concept of democracy, therefore before taking quotes from one another, we debated the importance of democracy in a parliamentary style! Our debate on democracy has passionately contested, which provided us with some brilliant quotes. We look forward to applying this to our work on the Elgin marble debate! What's your opinion on democracy? We would love to know in the comments section below. Who was the Duke of Elgin and what was his link to the Ancient Greeks?
