This week we had our theme open afternoon, which involved us sharing our learning with our parents. We built on knowledge of ancient Greek culture and society by developing our understanding of ancient Greek theatre.
The lesson began with discussing comedies and tragedies (the two main types of play in ancient Greece), and discussing the use of masks to portray emotion. This was then linked to the use of a theatre to share the experience of a play with those who paid to watch it. As a class, we concluded that ancient Greek theatre was central to Greek society and a popular part of their culture. To explore this further, we looked at the clothing they used to wear and then in small groups we researched and designed a chiton (ky-ton). The hard work and team work shown by each group was brilliant and very well presented in the class cat walk at the end of the lesson. Kestrels class have really developed their understanding of ancient Greek culture and society, not only during this lesson but throughout the whole term. We now have a much greater and informed idea of what it was like to live in ancient Greek times.

Answer in the comment section below to get a house point. Our ancient Greek vase project is almost complete! This week, in our theme lesson, we focused on adding the painted detail to our ancient Greek vases.
As a starting point, we used our pattern and human figure sketches to gain an idea of how we would like to paint our vases. We also looked at pictures of designs for further inspiration. The colours we used included: black, bronze, gold and yellow (traditionally used in ancient Greek vase design). Not only do that vases look great but they look authentic! Next week we will be looking at our designs and self-assess them. edIt has been a very busy week in kestrels, as we have: entertained our parents during a reading lesson, visited the local secondary school and enjoyed World Book Day!
Firstly, we invited parents to come in on Tuesday 28th March to experience a guided reading lesson, which was linked to our theme of Ancient Greece! Perseus and Medusa was the myth that we focused on, and for it we: created a story mountain, discussed the text and designed a hero/heroine to face such as challenge as Medusa! Next, on Wednesday 1st Match, we visited Tewkesbury Comprehensive School to enjoy a taster day of secondary school life. Not only did we get to see the school, but we were able to meet other primary school children and experience different lessons, including music, French and P.E. Overall, the trip was really positive and gave us a good insight into secondary school life. Finally, we celebrated World Book Day on Thursday 2nd March! This involved: a whole school parade of our costumes, a writing lesson planning our own stories, and debating how the character of a class book, A Monster Calls, felt in the recently read chapter. It has been a tiring week, however we have thoroughly enjoyed each part of it and look forward to our learning for next week! |
